Greenwater, WA · Highway 410
Sleep 10 to 15 minutes from Crystal Mountain and Mt. Rainier.
Two riverfront cabins in Crystal Village, run by people who ski, hike and eat here year-round. Stay with us and we'll tell you where to go.
The cabins
Two cabins on the White River. One for the family, one for the whole crew.
We book through Airbnb for now. Same cabins, same hosts, and you get their protections.
Crystal Cabin at Elk Beach
Sleeps 8 · 3 bedrooms · 5 beds · 2 baths · Pets OK
Three bedrooms on the White River in the Crystal Village community. The back deck and hot tub face the river, and elk come through the yard often enough that the trash bins have carabiners. Most of the furniture was hand-built from western red cedar in 2021. It smells great and scratches easily, so go easy on it.
King upstairs, a bunk room with a queen and a twin bunk, and a full bed on the main floor.
Good to know
- Starlink is fast for streaming. Video calls can drop when the trees get in the way.
- No A/C. Windows open at night, drapes closed in the morning, and it stays comfortable.
- The riverfront is shared with a few neighbors.
Alpen Commune
Sleeps 10 · 5 bedrooms · 7 beds · 3 baths · Pets OK
A three-level chalet on the White River, built around a wood-burning stove. The deck looks across the river to the ridge, and there's a river island just past the side channel that kids treat as their own. Downstairs is kid territory: bunk rooms with toy-filled closets, a TV, and a play structure out back.
Lofted king up top with a reading nook and river views. A king, a queen and a bunk room on the lower level. Another bunk room with a trundle on the main floor.
Good to know
- In winter, bring AWD or 4WD and chains. Highway 410 gets plowed. The driveway, less often.
- The loft bath has a low ceiling. Good for a soak, not for standing up in a shower.
- The garage is gear storage and laundry, not parking. Three spots out front.
Four seasons
The mountain changes every few months. So does the reason to come.
Winter
Dec to MarCrystal Mountain season. 350 to 500 inches of snow a year, and Highway 410 stays open to the Crystal turnoff, so getting there is the easy part.
Spring
Apr to JunThe most underrated time to visit. Groomers into May, snowpack at its deepest, and Skookum Falls running at full volume.
Summer
Jul to SepWildflowers peak late July to mid-August. When Sunrise is packed, Norse Peak and Clearwater Wilderness usually aren't.
Fall
Our pickCrowds drop after Labor Day, 410 turns gold, and a clear October morning on the mountain is hard to forget.
Area guide · Updated 2026
What we tell our friends before they drive up.
- No timed entry at Mt. Rainier in 2026. Get to Sunrise before 9am anyway.
- It can be 75°F in Greenwater and 45°F at Sunrise on the same day. Bring layers.
- Cell service is thin up here. Download offline maps before you leave the cabin.
- Chinook Pass closes in winter. Don't plan a Yakima loop outside May to October.

Where we eat
Greenwater has a short list. These are the good ones.
Greenwater
Naches Tavern
The historic local dive. Beer after a ski day, old-school vibe, cash preferred.
Greenwater
Wapiti Woolies
Coffee, milkshakes, pizza and grab-and-go sandwiches on the way to the trailhead.
Crystal Mountain
Summit House
Ride the gondola up for lunch in summer. The view does a lot of the work.
Enumclaw · 30 min
Cascade Pizza Co.
Our favorite. Get pies to go and eat them at Headworks Brewing.
